(un)Empowered
I just read that Obama finally won the democrat nomination race today. Not that I care much for US politics, nor did I pay much attention to the whole Hilary campaign, but I do think it was inevitable that race and sex came up as talking points. It will be forever debated now whether Obama would have stood a chance if he had run against a white male candidate, and how things might have turned out if Hilary had won. At any rate, I drew this some weeks ago because of what I was thinking at the time, about glass ceilings and how, for all the talk of political correctness in North America, women are still shackled to some extent by percceptions in society. It’s not as bad as it is in Asia in general, but it does make you wonder why, despite the fact Asian women by and large are far less assertive than their western counterparts, there have been more prominent female leaders there than over here. I mean, Indonesia had Megawati, the Phillipines has Arroyo, India had Indra, and so on… I don’t know how good/bad their governments were, but it’s strange that despite coming from places where women are much more marginalised, these women managed to climb to the top, wheres the US has never had (and if you believe Morrissey, probably never will) have a female president. Then again Morrissey may be wrong anyway if Obama becomes president and survives his term.
